Medication management for an aging parent: a system that holds
Missed doses and doubled doses are the two quiet failure modes of the pillbox on the counter, and neither announces itself. Here's how to tell when the system is slipping, and how to build one that doesn't depend on memory.
The signs it's slipping
You rarely catch a missed dose directly. You catch the evidence: bottles that run out too early or too late, a pillbox with yesterday's compartments still full (or worse, empty two days ahead), pharmacy calls about unfilled refills, or "did I take that?" asked more than occasionally. Any one of these is worth acting on, because medication mix-ups are one of the most common reasons an otherwise stable situation suddenly isn't.
The system: three moves before any gadget

One pharmacy. Consolidating to a single pharmacy means one system checking for interactions and one place that notices when refills go strange. Many pharmacies will also sync refills to the same day each month and pre-sort medications into blister packs, often free for the asking.
One review. Bring every bottle (the "brown bag" method) to the next doctor visit and ask for a medication review. Prescriptions accumulate; what made sense three doctors ago may not make sense today, and drowsiness or dizziness from an outdated combination is a fall risk hiding in a bottle.
When a dispenser earns its keep
A $10 weekly pillbox works while remembering works. The step up matters when it doesn't: an automatic dispenser that is locked and timed releases only the right compartment at the right hour, which handles both failure modes at once (nothing missed, nothing doubled). The feature worth paying for is the family alert: an app notification to the adult child when a dose goes untaken, which turns "I wonder if Mom took her pills" into an answer instead of a worry.
