The car keys talk

Driving is freedom, identity, and adulthood itself, which is why this conversation cuts so deep. Handle it as a safety issue, gently, and give something back.

This one isn't really about driving. It's about the loss of independence driving represents. Acknowledge that directly, focus on specific safety concerns (not age), and always pair the ask with a way to keep their freedom.

A way to open it“Dad, I need to talk about something hard, and I want you to know it's because I love you and I'd never forgive myself if something happened. I've noticed [the dent, the close call, getting lost]. Can we figure out together how you keep getting where you need to go safely?”

Do

Cite specific incidents, not birthdays. Involve their doctor (many states let physicians flag concerns). Line up alternatives first: rides, delivery, a driving evaluation. Frame it as keeping freedom, not losing it.

Don't

Grab the keys in anger or by surprise. Make it about their age. Leave them stranded with no plan. Let it become a power struggle between you.

If it goes badly

If they refuse and you believe they're a danger, you have options that keep you out of the villain role: ask the doctor to order a formal driving evaluation, or contact your state's DMV about a medical review (many states accept confidential reports). It feels like a betrayal; a crash would be worse.

This is a season of conversations, not one talk. Almost no family gets a yes on the first try. Plant the seed, keep the relationship warm, and come back to it. More openers in our other conversation guides.
