The first talk

The hardest part isn't the plan. It's the first sentence. Here's how to open the conversation so it doesn't slam shut.

The first conversation isn't about solving anything. Its only job is to open a door you can walk back through later. Lead with love and one observation, not a conclusion or a plan.

A way to open it“Mom, I'm not trying to change anything today. I love you and I've been worrying a little, and I'd rather worry out loud with you than behind your back. Can I just tell you the couple of things I've noticed?”

Do

Pick a calm, private moment. Lead with one specific observation. Ask for their view and actually listen. Keep the first ask tiny.

Don't

Ambush them at a holiday dinner. Arrive with a binder and a plan. Use the words “can't” or “have to.” Try to solve everything in one sitting.

If it goes badly

If they shut down, don't push; you've planted the seed, and that was the whole goal. Say “okay, we don't have to figure it out now,” and circle back in a week or two. Recruit a person they trust more than you on this topic if you have to.

This is a season of conversations, not one talk. Almost no family gets a yes on the first try. Plant the seed, keep the relationship warm, and come back to it. More openers in our other conversation guides.
