VA benefits for senior care: an honest overview
If your parent served (or was married to someone who did), an hour spent checking VA eligibility can be worth more than months of other cost-cutting. Here's the honest version, including who it won't help.
The benefit families miss: Aid & Attendance
Aid & Attendance is an add-on to the VA pension for veterans (and surviving spouses) who need help with daily activities (bathing, dressing, medications), or are housebound. It pays a monthly cash benefit that can be put toward home care, assisted living, or a nursing home. It is chronically under-claimed, largely because families don't know it exists.
The eligibility signals worth checking
- Service: for those who entered active duty before September 8, 1980, generally at least 90 days of active duty with at least one day during a designated wartime period; for those who entered after that date, generally at least 24 months (or the full period they were called up). Officers and edge cases have their own rules, one more reason to use an accredited VSO rather than self-assess. A discharge that wasn't dishonorable is required across the board.
- Care need: documented help needed with daily activities, or being housebound, exactly the situations this site's assessment surfaces.
- Financial limits: the VA applies income and net-worth limits, but unreimbursed care expenses reduce countable income, which is precisely why families already paying for care often qualify when they assume they don't.
How to apply for free
Never pay anyone to "unlock" VA benefits. Accredited Veterans Service Officers (through the VFW, American Legion, DAV, or your county's veterans office) prepare and file these claims at no charge, and they know the evidence the VA wants. Anyone charging fees to file an initial claim, or steering you into annuities to "qualify," is the red flag itself.
While the claim processes
Claims take months; retroactive pay often applies from the filing date, so file sooner than feels ready, and keep paying-for-care records. Meanwhile, the other funding paths can bridge the gap.
Does the care need actually qualify?
The assessment documents exactly the daily-activity picture a VA claim is built on, and what level of care it points to.
