The memory evaluation talk
Fear of a dementia diagnosis makes people avoid the very checkup that could help. Frame it as ruling things out, because many memory issues are treatable.
The key reframe: a memory evaluation isn't a judgment, it's information, and a surprising number of memory problems have reversible causes (medication interactions, thyroid issues, urinary tract infections, depression, B12 deficiency). You're not suggesting they have dementia; you're suggesting they find out what's actually going on.
Do
Frame it as ruling things out. Mention the treatable causes. Tie it to the free Medicare Annual Wellness Visit (cognitive screening is included). Offer to go with them.Don't
Use the word “dementia” or “Alzheimer's” as an accusation. Diagnose them yourself. Make it a confrontation. Wait until a crisis forces it.If it goes badly
If they refuse, loop in their physician privately. You can share your observations with the doctor's office even if privacy rules keep the answers one-directional, and the doctor can raise it during a routine visit. A concern coming from the doctor often lands very differently than the same words from an adult child.
