Honest scope: Medicare's overall star rating rolls up dozens of measures (safety, readmissions, patient experience, timely care) into one number. It's a useful summary, but a hospital can be excellent for one thing and average for another, so a star is a starting point, not the whole story. Some hospitals, including VA and certain specialty hospitals, don't receive an overall star; we show that plainly rather than guessing.
